Pet Industry Market Overview: Why Are Spending Rising in the US?

Profits from pets: The United States of America has gone to the dogs and cats and…

People will buy their guinea pigs sleeping quarters in the form of tents and granola bars for their birds.
Even rats can enjoy the luxuries of life by having a couch placed in their enclosure.

According to statistics compiled by the industry, the amount of money spent on pets in the United States has increased by a factor of two in the past decade. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, consumers in the United States spent nearly $36 billion on their pets in 2017 and show no signs of slowing down in that spending trend. Consumers are treating their animals more like humans in terms of medical care, food, material possessions, clothing, and haircuts, which has contributed to the growth in the industry.

They prefer to refer to it as a pet spa or pet hotel, but Don and Chris Anderson opened a boarding kennel in Galva, Illinois, last year and gave it the name Lucky Dog Lodge. The chain-link fences have been replaced with 22 private “suites” made of white vinyl that are arranged in the style of horse stables. Private condominiums for cats are provided, complete with lattice-front doors and wood blinds for added discretion.

The Galesburg (Illinois) Animal Hospital has seen an increase in the amount of money spent by customers, which has contributed to the hospital’s threefold expansion since Dr. Greg and Pam Weech first purchased it in 1983. This company provides veterinary services, as well as grooming, boarding, and training for dogs to obey commands.

The shop underwent an expansion a few years ago, adding an in-house laboratory for quick blood test results. Most recently, it finished adding more offices and workspace to accommodate the growing business.

Pam Weech stated that the building had outgrown itself due to the expansion of the company over the years.
Kim Thompson, a professional groomer at the company, reported that her workload has more than doubled in the past three years.

She shared her experience, saying, “When I first started, I was lucky to have four to five a day.”

Currently, she shears, bathes, dries, fluffs, and shears again six to nine dogs each day. After everything is over, they take a bandana with them when they leave.

When compared to the amount of clothing purchased by dog owners from a local resident named Priscilla Hawkinson, who makes dog coats and sells them on eBay, that is a relatively small amount of clothing.

The industry that deals in supplies for pets is capitalizing on the opportunities presented by the pet market. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, member companies produce products such as dog water bowls with fountains and flowing streams, as well as mouthwash for pets and litter boxes that clean themselves.

More and more hotels are instituting pet-friendly policies and extending a warm welcome to guests’ four-legged friends by providing them with oversized pillows, doggie robes, and check-in gift packages consisting of toys and treats.

There are a variety of companies that sell products for pets, including food, shampoo, pet clothes, and gourmet treats. Some of these companies include Paul Mitchell, Harley-Davidson, and Old Navy.

In addition, the food is not the traditional “dog chow” that most modern pet owners probably fed their childhood best friend when they were younger.

Food for canines is the most popular item at Thorn’s Pets & Supplies, a relatively new business located in Galesburg, Illinois. Emily Thorn, who is also a part-owner of the business, mentioned that they carry food that is appropriate for senior dogs, dogs with sensitive skin or stomachs, dogs that are trying to lose weight, or control their weight. For cats, the product line is comparable, with the addition of hairball control options suitable for all categories of cats, including elderly cats, overweight cats, cats with sensitive stomachs, and others.

“We’re starting to see this need for either the so-called holistic lines or really human-grade ingredients,” the company said.

In general, some modern pet foods are up to the same high standards of quality as the food we eat ourselves.

What a miserable existence living in the crate would be.
