‘Love Your Pet’ Portrait Fundraiser- Studio 970 & Our Companions

Love Your Pet is the name of a portrait charity fundraiser that is currently being held by Studio 970 Photography in support of Our Companions Animal Sanctuary. Regular portrait sessions completed at Studio 970 in West Hartford with your pet or pets will result in donations to Our Companions totaling a portion of the total proceeds from those sessions.

The owners of the studio, Paulette Mertes and Lisa Asp, are both huge animal welfare advocates and have organized previous charity events to benefit animal rescue groups. The importance of providing assistance to homeless animals is something that is very near and dear to the hearts of Paulette and Lisa. Both of them have adopted animals from rescue organizations. They are aware that there are a lot of people who are unaware of how many abandoned animals there are in the world. Paulette has stated that “we’re hoping for a successful fundraiser, and part of that is getting the word out there.”

Paulette and Lisa have been co-workers for a number of years, and it has been three years since they opened Studio 970 together. They have a combined total of 25 years of experience in the field of photography between the two of them. Since the early 1990s, they have been offering portrait photography services, and they particularly enjoy taking pictures of people’s pets. One hour of studio time, as well as time for a consultation, is included in a regular portrait session, which is what the fundraiser is for. Customers have the option of bringing more than one pet, as well as themselves, to be photographed during their session.

Both WAG (We Adopt Greyhounds) and The Humane Society benefited from their fundraising efforts in the previous year. They will continue to provide financial assistance to these organizations in the years to come; however, after learning about Our Companions’ mission to put an end to the practice of euthanasia, they decided to lend a hand.

In May of 2002, the non-profit organization known as Our Companions was established. They have high hopes of transforming Connecticut into a state where healthy animals are not put to death. In order to accomplish this goal, they are working on establishing an animal sanctuary that will house abused and neglected animals that require specialized medical attention. Our Companions was fortunate enough to receive a generous donation of 43 acres of land in Ashford, Connecticut, for the benefit of their charitable cause.

The sanctuary will feature a dog park, hiking trails, reflection gardens, a spay and neuter clinic, a low cost training center, a community center, therapy programs, and a center for community gatherings. According to Our Companions, “at the sanctuary, every animal will be saved from destruction and receive special care.”

The project will be carried out in three stages, the first of which is scheduled to be finished in the current year. The total cost of the undertaking is fifteen million dollars. The phases consist of the following:

  1. Establishing a sanctuary that will provide care for pets and other domestic animals that are facing the possibility of being put down.
  2. Make available, for a reasonable price, pet behavior services that are in demand in the community.
  3. Establishing collaborative service-based partnerships with other animal welfare organizations in order to develop programs that tackle the underlying issues that lead to pets being without homes.

The Love Your Pet fundraiser that Studio 970 is hosting has been going on all throughout the month of February, and it is possible that it will continue into March if there is sufficient interest.
